Worst Airline Luggage DecisionNominee

December 3rd, 2009 by Doug Lansky

How about when Jetstar Airline (budget sidekick to Qantas) made Paralympian Kurt Fearnley check his wheelchair, forcing him to drag  himself through an airport and onto the plane. They did, in the end, offer an apology for any “embarrassment and hurt” that was caused by the incident.

This caption creates an image of a gate agent kicking this guy out of his chair onto the floor. A more complete telling of the story in The Age reads as follows:

“Fearnley, a wheelchair-marathon champion who last week completed the Kokoda Track on his knees, says he chose to crawl through Brisbane Airport rather than use an unsuitable chair offered by the airline.”

Far be it for me to defend an airline, but they didn’t, by any means FORCE him to crawl through the airport. They were following SOP, with which he took exception.
